I slept on my side through thirty years of rotating shifts at the paper mill and never gave it a thought until I retired and started waking at three in the morning with a kink in my neck. Here is what I worked out. A flat fiberfill pillow goes pancake flat by two in the morning, so your head drops and your shoulder rolls forward. A solid block of memory foam holds its height, but it holds one height forever, whether that height happens to suit you or not. I owned one of each. The fiberfill went in the trash and the block is in the closet.

In October of last year I sat at the kitchen table with a yellow legal pad and wrote down the five things waking me up. A sore neck was third on the list. One Amazon order later, the Coop Home Goods Original Adjustable Pillow was on my side of the queen bed, and it has been there about thirteen months now, through one winter and one summer. I am the side sleeper in this house. Joyce sleeps cold and keeps her own pillow.

Eight inches of loft gives your shoulder somewhere to go

A side sleeper needs the pillow to fill the gap between the ear and the mattress, and that gap is roughly as wide as your shoulder. The Coop Home Goods Original is listed at 8 inches thick before you take a single piece of fill out. For me that meant the top of the pillow reached my neck instead of my jaw, which is the difference between lying down and lying crooked. I took fill out anyway, but I started from a pillow that was tall enough rather than one I had to prop up with a folded towel.

Cross-cut memory foam holds its height instead of going flat

The fill is a blend, 76 percent visco polyurethane foam and 24 percent polyester gel fiber, cut into small pieces rather than molded into one slab. That matters at two in the morning. My old fiberfill pillow compressed under my head and stayed compressed until I punched it. This one shifts and settles but it does not collapse into a pancake. Shredded fill also moves with you a little when you roll from one side to the other, instead of fighting you the way a solid slab does.

You take fill out over a few evenings until it fits you

This is the part nobody explains well. You do not get it right the first night. My first evening I unzipped the cover, pulled out some fill, and the pillow was still too tall. The second evening I took out more and went too far, and I spent one night on a pillow worse than the one that arrived. The third evening I put a handful back and stopped. About a third of the fill stayed out. That was the end of it.

The extra fill ships in the box, so a wrong guess is not permanent

Every Coop Home Goods pillow comes with a bag of Oomph fill, which is their name for the loose fill packed alongside it. That is the detail that made me willing to try it at all. If you take out too much one evening you are not stuck with a pillow that is now too low, because the material to bring it back up is already sitting in the box. All the fill I removed lives in one bag in the closet, and I have not opened that bag since.

Three and a half pounds keeps it where you put it

The pillow weighs 3.5 pounds. That is heavy for a pillow and it took me two or three nights to stop noticing the weight when I lifted it. The trade is worth it. It stays put. It does not creep up the headboard or work its way out from under my head when I turn over at four in the morning for the bathroom trip. Every light pillow I have owned drifted somewhere during the night. This one does not.

The cover unzips and washes in the machine on cold

The outer cover is a Lulltra fabric, 60 percent polyester and 40 percent viscose rayon, and it zips off the pillow. Cold water, gentle cycle, no fabric softener, no bleach, tumble dry low. I have washed mine a few times and it has come out looking the same as it went in. You do not wash the fill. You wash the cover. That is the whole maintenance routine, and it takes about as long as washing a pillowcase.

A standard queen, so your own pillowcase fits

This is a queen size pillow, rectangular, and an ordinary queen pillowcase goes straight on it. That sounds like a small thing until you have bought a shaped or oversized pillow and found out your linens no longer work on it. My pillowcase is nothing special and it fit the first time. Nothing about the bed changed except what was under my head. Joyce's side of the bed is exactly as it was.

The foam is freshly made and certified, not repurposed

The listing states the memory foam is freshly manufactured rather than repurposed or recycled, and the pillow carries CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certifications. I am not a chemist and I am not going to pretend to be one. What I can tell you is that it had a foam smell for the first few days, which is what new foam does, and then it faded on its own. If you are sensitive to smells, give it a few days before you decide anything.

It is built for back and stomach sleepers too

The title calls it a medium firm pillow for back, stomach and side sleepers, and the adjustable part is why that makes sense. A stomach sleeper needs almost no height and would take most of the fill out. A back sleeper lands somewhere in the middle. The pillow itself never changes. The amount of fill inside it does, and you are the one who decides that over a few evenings with the zipper open.

Once it is right, you stop thinking about it

I have not touched the fill since that third evening about thirteen months ago. That is the test I care about. A pillow that needs fiddling with every week is a chore, not a pillow. The Coop Home Goods pillow got set in October of last year and has been a pillow ever since. It did not fix my sleep on its own, and it is not a cure for anything. My neck soreness eased over about two weeks, and it has not come back the way it used to.

The second evening I took out too much and spent one night on a pillow worse than the one that arrived. The third evening I put a handful back and stopped.

What I'd Skip

I would skip the idea that you need one of these on both sides of the bed. Joyce sleeps cold, sleeps straight through the streetlight, and is perfectly content with the pillow she already had. One Coop Home Goods pillow in this house was the right number. I would also skip buying it and judging it on the first night, because the first night tells you almost nothing and the second evening might talk you into taking out too much. Give it three evenings. And I would skip any plan to keep re stuffing it, because once it is set you leave it alone, and the leftover fill just sits in the closet.

Thirteen months on one pillow, and the fill bag is still closed

If you sleep on your side and your ear and your shoulder never seem to agree, start with a pillow you are allowed to change. Queen size, cross-cut memory foam, cover washes on cold.
